Malawi information
Malawi is a little known gem of a country in the heart of Central-Southern Africa that offers a true African experience at relatively minimal cost. Few Countries are so dominated by a single geographical feature as the “Land of the Lake”, also known as “The Warm Heart of Africa”.
Lake Malawi follows the dramatic contours of the Great Rift Valley for a distance of 585 km; it is up to 100 km wide in parts, and it covers more than 15% of Malawi’s surface area. Enclosed by sheer mountains and edged by seemingly endless palm-fringed sandy beaches, Lake Malawi is the most beautiful of Africa’s great lakes, and the indisputable focal point of Malawi’s tourist industry.
For the watersport enthusiast, the Lake is unsurpassed. The unimpeded stretches of clear safe water are a paradise for waterskiers and board sailors. With over 500 species of fish Lake Malawi offers sheer delight in terms of scuba diving and snorkeling.
The spectacular Zomba Plateau is one of the most popular areas in Malawi for walking and hiking, while Mount Mulanje, at 3000 metres, is the highest mountain in central Africa. Both these areas are famous for their invigorating climate and spectacular scenery.
The Liwonde National Park is one of the best wildlife reserves in Malawi. It is a land of flood grassland, reed swamps and floating meadows, incorporating the Shire river which is the main outlet of Lake Malawi. Here one finds elephant, hippo, waterbuck, reedbuck and the proud sable. Birdlife is prolific, especially along the river where the African fish eagle, the Palmnut Vulture and Pel’s fishing owl are often seen.
With the excellent facilities and an abundance of wildlife, Liwonde can rightfully claim a place among the premier national parks in Africa.
The four other National Parks of Malawi are the Nyika , Kasungu , Lengwe and Lake Malawi National Parks, the latter protecting the Cape Maclear area on the southern lake shore.
