Within the Maropeng visitor attraction lies an exciting 4-billion-year journey on an underground lake, through the elemental forces – water, air, fire and earth – dipping through waterfalls and real icebergs, into the eye of a storm, past erupting volcanoes and through the depths of the earth and emerging at the beginning of the world. From here, the journey continues through an experience highlighting the history of our world and humankind as a species, brought to life via audiovisual techniques, evocative sound effects, theme-park technology and theatrical displays. There are also real fossils on display at the visitor centre.

Housing one of South Africa’s most exciting exhibitions, the Maropeng Visitor Centre is an award-winning attraction and has a lot to offer visitors to Gauteng.

Situated in the tranquil Witwatersberg and Magaliesberg ranges, Maropeng is the official visitor centre for the Cradle of Humankind, which is one of South Africa’s eight World Heritages Sites.

The exhibition centre is housed in the Tumulus, a unique architectural structure resembling an ancient burial mound. Visitors walk down a ramp, underground, and discover how the world began millions of years ago. This is followed by a thrilling underground boat ride back in time through the various stages of Earth’s creation. The exhibition then continues informing visitors about the evolution of humankind through fun interactive displays and games.
