The Rietvlei Nature Reserve is situated about 18 km south of South Africa’s Capital, Pretoria. The Reserve offers approximately 272 bird species, as well as Buffalo, Rhino, Hippo, and a vast variety of antelopes.

The Rietvlei Nature Reserve is situated 18 km from the centre of Pretoria and 38 km from the OR Tambo International Airport. The 3 800 ha of endangered Bankenveld grassland includes open plains and undulating hills. The extensive vlei areas and tributary streams support the scenic splendour of the azure blue Rietvlei Dam, situated in the Sesmyl (Six Mile) Spruit. The dam was built during the great depression (from about 1929 to early 1930’s) and was completed in 1934. Manual laborers were paid 4 shilling a month and soil was carted away by mule carts.

The Nauture Reserve was proclaimed in 1948. Rietvlei dam provides Pretoria with 15% of it’s water. The reserve covers an area of 3800 hectares and can support up to 2000 head of game, including rhino, blesbuck, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, eland, Burchell’s zebra, waterbuck, reedbuck, springbuck, mountain reedbuck, steenbuck and grey duiker can be viewed here. During the Touraco Tour you’ll be able to spot these animals on the open plains, and the 60 km of tarred and dirt roads will take you close up.

Bird watchers can be sure of seeing birds they have never seen before.
