Kgalagadi National Park and Augrabies Waterfalls Safari – 6 Days (6 days – 5 Nights):
HIGHLIGHTS: Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park
1. Day – Upington – Kgalagadi National Park – Twee Rivieren Camp
8:00 Departure from your hotel in Upington, or from the Upington Airport.
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park lies some 250 km from Upington in the far north of the Northern Cape and around 904 km from Johannesburg city. A 3 hour drive takes us through the beautiful and constantly changing Kalahari desert, past various salt pans towards the park which covers over 38 000 km² – 28,400 km² in Botswana and 9,600 km² in South Africa. One of South Africa’s best kept safari secrets, Kgalagadi Park is home to an array of hardy plants and a surprising abundance of animals.
The Park is home to a wide selection of predators such as the famous black manned Kalahari Lions, Cheetahs, Leopards, Spotted and Brown Hyenas, Jackals, Caracal, African Wildcat, Bat-eared Foxes, Cape Foxes as well as Wild Dogs. Antelope such as Gemsbok, Blue Wildebeest, Springbok, Eland, Hartebeest are present as well as about 290 bird species, including 20 raptor species and many more.
Towards lunch time we’ll arrive at Twee Rivieren, the main camp of the Kgalagadi National Park, where we’ll settle in our overnight accommodation for a short rest. In the afternoon we depart on our first game drive until sunset, to explore this area. Optional 3 hour Sunset- or Night game drive with rangers in an open truck.
The chalets at Twee Rivieren are air-conditioned and the camp has a swimming pool.
(Overnight: Dinner & Breakfast – Twee Rivieren camp – Kgalagadi National Park, ).
Day 2. Kgalagadi National Park – Nossob Camp
Early in the morning we enjoy breakfast and pack our vehicle. The park consists of two main roads along the dry river beds of the Nossob river & the Auob river. The two paths are connected with dune roads from east to west. The watering holes are along the riverbeds.
Today we’ll pick the Nossob river drive for our early morning Game drive, to cover the 160 km towards Nossob camp, our next overnight camp. Our day’s focus is on discovering the wildlife of the Kalahari and to explore the sensitive ecosystem of this semi-desert. The Kgalagadi, meaning the land of thirst, is known for its red dunes and vast open spaces.
In the evening you may opt for an optional 3 hour Sunset- or Night game drive with rangers in an open truck. The Kgalagadi Park offers an excellent introduction to nocturnal animals, raptors and the black-maned Kalahari lion. The park has a healthy predator population. The predator territories cover predominantly the river beds. Big acacia trees are prominent along these riverbeds. The trees provide a staple supplement to the browsers along with shade from the Kalahari sun.
Special feature at Nossob: Game hide with spotlight to watch animals coming to drink.
The chalets at Nossob camp are air-conditioned and the camp has a swimming pool.
(Overnight: Dinner & Breakfast – Nossob camp – Kgalagadi National Park)
Day 3. Kgalagadi National Park – Mata-Mata Camp
After an early breakfast we’ll leave on our early morning drive, hoping to meet hyenas returning from their night encounters. We’ll take all luggage along to our next overnight camp, Mata-Mata.
Again we experience the vastness of Africa’s landscapes and open blue skies, absorbing the deep silence and stillness of this harsh land. The Kgalagadi Transfontier Park suffers from extreme weather, with high heat during the day in summer and extreme cold during the day and night in winter.
Optional 3 hour sunset- or Night game drive with rangers in an open truck after gates closed. or morning bush walk.
Special feature at Mata-Mata: Game hide with spotlight.
The chalets at Mata-Mata camp are air-conditioned and the camp has a swimming pool.
(Overnight: Dinner & Breakfast – Mata-Mata camp – Kgalagadi National Park)
Day 4. Kgalagadi National Park – Twee Rivieren Camp – Upington
The last early in the morning where we enjoy breakfast and pack our vehicle. Today we’ll pick the Auob river drive for our early morning Game drive, to cover the 120 km towards Twee Rivieren camp, which we’ll reach towards lunchtime.
This huge desert landscape is part of the Kalahari Desert – the largest continuous area of sand in the world, characterized by red sand dunes and sparse vegetation, Camel-thorn-dotted grasslands and the dry bed of the Auob River. Once again we expect to see big herds, of springbok, Gemsbok (or Oryx), Blue Wildebeest. In the shade of the big Arcadia trees we hope to get a last sighting of the Black Maned Kalahari Lion, Cheetah or even a Leopard.
At Twee Rivieren we leave the dusty road of the park and travel back via Upington to the Augrabies National Park by tar road. Augrabies lies approximately 120 km west of Upington; we’ll reach the park towards the end of the day.
(Overnight: Dinner & Breakfast – Augrabies National Park camp – Augrabies National Park)
Day 5: Augrabies Falls National Park
Few sights are as awesome or a sound as deafening as water thundering down the 150 deep & 56 metre wide Augrabies Waterfall when the Orange River is in a full flood. The falls lie directly next to the rest camp, within each reach by foot. A number of good look-out platforms allow perfect views of the spectacular falls. The Khoi (Bushman) people called it “Aukoerebis”, or place of Great Noise, as this powerful flow of water is unleashed from rocky surroundings characterized by the 18 km abyss of the Orange River Gorge.
Today there is the opportunity to do a lovely walk though this breathtaking rocky area. In the afternoon we depart on a game drive to witness the rich diversity of birds, as well as desert plants and a variety of wild animals like Kudu, Springbok, Klippspringer, Baboons and meerkat. Furthermore the park offers breathtaking viewpoints on the edge of the up to 200 meter deep Canyon.

Day 6: Augrabies Falls National Park – Upington
After Breakfast the is still time for another walk or game drive. On our way back to Upington we visit Keimus & Kakamas, with the possibility of a wine tasting excursion. The area around the mighty Orange River is a well know wine growing area of South Africa.
After that we return to Upington, where we’ll reach your Guesthouse, of the airport by late afternoon. This is the end of your Kgalagadi & Augrabies National Park Safari, unless you opt for a tour extension, like e.g a visit of the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, the second biggest Canyon in the world.
